Webinar Recap: What are the differences between Grandstream SLA and SCA?

This week, Grandstream and VoIP Supply hosted another successful webinar to talk about SLA and SCA features. We received a lot of great questions during the webinar that we’d like to share with all of you who might have missed it!

Recap the webinar with our presentation slides here and Q&A session below.

What was covered in the webinar?

  • Shared Line Appearance (SLA) allows mapping the line key on the IP phone to the POTS lines
  • Shared Call Appearance (SCA) allows multiple phones to share the same extensions and services
  • Call Park
  • Live Demo
    • How to enable SCA
    • How to set up extensions
    • Call Parking
    • Analog Trunks

Grandstream Webinar Q&A Session

Q1: Does the SLA work with PRI?

A: Grandstream’s UCM PBX has a built-in PRI you can use. You can use SCA to monitor the lines. This method only works if each channel has a DID that is only directed to an extension. It’s pseudo monitoring, but there is no true trunk monitoring for PRI.

Q2: Can you have a private extension use SCA and not ring on incoming calls? For example you only want a few phones to ring on the lines but everyone else is able to pick up the line and dial out, or grab calls that are on hold?

A: If you don’t want it to ring, you just want to monitor, under “add private number”, you can disable the function. You can also uncheck ”allow origination from this” to block outgoing calls.

Q3: Call Park vs Monitored Call Park feature usage?

A: On your UCM, there’s no difference between these two. For GXP IP phones with a third-party PBX, we suggest using a monitored call park instead of call park.

Q4: If you change the VPK #1 from default does the phone continue to work? I thought VPK #1 always has to be default as the phone needs to know what account to dial and receive calls on.

A: It depends. VPK1 is typically tied to whatever the main account is. Avoid changing this. Please watch the recording for more details.
