More on the Unidata SQ-3000 Wireless Video Phone…and a Contest!

Now onto the Unidata SQ-3000, this is the impressive SIP WiFI Video phone that can stream both video and HD voice (g.722) on WiFI SIP calls. Unidata has released a newer firmware version for this phone as well, version 1.5.3G. This firmware can be downloaded very easily, simply power on your SQ-3000, connect it to your Wireless Access Point (ensure that AP has access to internet), and let the phone begin the Firmware Upgrade process. This is automatic and the phone should perform the upgrade (if not upgraded already) to the 1.5.3G firmware anywhere from 1-2 minutes of connecting to your wireless AP. The process takes anywhere from 5-10 minutes to complete, so just be patient.

Unidata has noticed some issues with 1.5.3G specifically with Asterisk 1.6 users and registration, where for some reason; the SQ-3000 will not register to an Asterisk 1.6 core. Don’t worry if you’re a 1.6 user, a new firmware version fixing this should be available around the 9th of October.

This new firmware version will fix the registration issue with Asterisk 1.6, and also add Mute and Forward functions. Later on in the month, look for STUN and NAT support.

Further down the road, (no set date as of yet), Unidata will release a simple web browser for hotspot authentication. This will allow you and me to connect to our corporate PBX or VoIP Service provider over free public hotspots that require authentication based on http.

The next feature has absolutely blown my mind, because to my knowledge, the feature that Unidata will support has never been done before on a Wireless SIP Video phone.

Can you guess what the feature is?

    2.8″ touch screen display with 240 x 320 resolution ?
    30 fps video recording/playback?
    G.722.2 Wide-band audio codec?
    Conference call capability?

  • video recording/playback?

  • 3 way video and voice conference?

  • XHTML browser?

My first guess on the new feature is gonna be an Instant Messaging app supporting SIMPLE and XMPP and other protocols.

My second guess would be a way to be video call recording / video camera. I noticed way back when that they have a microsd slot, but I never saw any mention of the ability to record.

Finally, my last guess is an app to stream audio / video to the phone (radio stations, television, movies). Maybe even youtube video.
