3 Typical Ways Patton Gateways Fit in your Business Applications

As you may know, VoIP gateways provide several types of bi-directional conversions, including Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) and TDM to SIP. Some gateways even provide more advanced functions such as session border controller (SBC), security firewall, failover, etc.

Many of our customers use Patton media gateways to solve a variety of different IP-based system challenges. Today, we are going to walk you through the three most common use cases:

How Do Patton Gateways Fit in my Business?

#1 TDM to SIP

Patton gateways reduce your business’s operating costs by avoiding the expensive tolls levied by a public switched telephone network (PSTN). The VoIP gateway connects your traditional phone system to a SIP trunk with just a fraction of the original cost you paid.

#2 VoIP Provider to Analog POTS or Digital ISDN PBX

A Patton gateway can also connect an all-IP communication system (on-premise IP PBX or cloud IP PBX) to your legacy PSTN trunk. Many businesses upgrade their traditional business phone system to an  Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) over a SIP trunk with an IP media gateway to avoid the expensive toll-based system.

#3 From SIP to TDM

What if I need to keep the old phone system up and running during the transition? Not a problem. Patton gateways are able to connect your modern SIP communications system with a T1/E1/PRI service provided by a legacy carrier. This will allow you to keep your traditional system running normally while transitioning to a new IP-based phone system.

What communication challenges have you solved with Patton gateways? Where do you need Patton gateways to fit in your IP telephony implementations? Share with us!

Polycom Phones vs Yealink Phones: What are the differences?

August 8, 2018 by Ying-Hui Chen

Our tech support team at VoIP Supply offers great pre- and post-sales support plus provisioning, consultations, configuration, and installation help. We get a lot of VoIP hardware and software questions and would like to share the solutions with everyone.

In previous Mom’s calling Q&A series, we have discussed: Grandstream GVC3202 with Google Hangouts: Do I need to order the IPVideoTalk? Today, we have more new real questions and answers from VoIP users just like you.

What are the differences between Polycom and Yealink phones?

Q: I was wondering what the differences between your phones, Cisco, Yealink, and Polycom.

A: Cisco phones generally are optimized for Cisco call manager which is proprietary, and Polycom runs on open source SIP type systems.

Both Yealink and Polycom are very reliable phone manufacturers. They have different highlights:

  • Polycom phones are known for its outstanding sound quality altogether.
  • The Yealink T4 series is compatible with the WF40 wifi dongle which gives you the ability to utilize wifi instead of a hard connection. Most desk phones don’t have this function.

STAY TUNED

How to Upgrade the Free Version of 3CX Phone System to a Commercial Version?

August 7, 2018 by Ying-Hui Chen

3CX provides call switching, routing, and queueing. The web-based interface makes the configuration and management as easy as a breeze! With 3CX phone systems, you are able to monitor phone status simply from a web browser. While the free version of 3CX is popular, many people are looking to upgrade to one of the commercial versions for more advanced capabilities. How? It’s fairly easy. Let’s take a look!

3CX Free version vs paid version: What are the differences?

3CX is priced as an annual license/subscription based on the number of simultaneous calls you need. The free version gives you the capability to handle up to 16 simultaneous calls for free for one year, including hosting.

All editions provide basic functionalities such as web-based configuration and status indication, auto attendant, unified communications. However, the paid versions of 3CX give you more advanced features such as advanced real time queue statistics, advanced agent statistics, call back feature, and more.

How to upgrade from the free version of 3CX to a commercial version

You can easily upgrade your free version of the 3CX software through a unique activation license key provided to you via email after your purchase. You can then apply it directly from the 3CX admin GUI configuration.

Updates are instantaneous after you apply them. They are based upon the maximum number of concurrent calls you will have on your solution, and can be easily upgraded to a higher amount of simultaneous calls if needed. Once again, changes are done via the web GUI and are instantaneous.

Fact vs Fiction: Can I Get VoIP Through My Internet Provider? (Infographic)

August 1, 2018 by Ying-Hui Chen

Recently, we have received many questions about getting VoIP service from an existing Internet service provider. We have seen some of the following questions,  can I bundle a VoIP phone system through their Internet provider? Will the process be easier? What do I need to be aware of?

If you are asking the same questions, be sure to read this article before it’s too late! We are going to share some facts from the three most common fictions.

Can I Get VoIP Through My Internet Provider?

Fiction #1: All I need is an Internet connection for VoIP to work

Fact: While you do need the Internet to make VoIP calls, it is more complicated than just that! Aside from the Internet connection, you will also need to consider the VoIP hardware, your calling habits, types of VoIP service you want to have (on-premise or hosted), and much much more! See a full list of VoIP requirements here.

If you are new to VoIP, we recommend you visit our website and download our most comprehensive FREE VoIP guides to learn more about VoIP before you make any decisions. If you’re still confused, then give us a call at 1-800-398-8647!

Fiction #2: I have the Internet service already so it’s easier to bundle my VoIP phone system through my existing Internet Provider.

Fact: It might seem easier to bundle a phone solution directly through your existing Internet provider; however, it can be a long-term headache if your provider is not a VoIP expert. Be sure to consult with your provider first to make sure they are experienced and able to offer the best value solutions.

Also, sometimes the bundle solutions from Internet providers might not be the best deals in terms of service quality, technical support, and pricing. So look carefully – consult, compare, and evaluate!

Most recently we had a customer purchase their VoIP phones through their internet service provider and that provider locked the phones, meaning they cannot be resold for fair market value. They are looking for new service because they are not happy, they had to purchase all new phones, an expense they would not have had to worry about had they done a little homework.

Fiction #3: My Internet provider should know everything Internet-related so they must be VoIP experts.

Fact: Yes, your internet service provider provides your “Internet service”, but that does not mean they are an expert in the VoIP industry. The Internet is an indispensable element to make VoIP work but, keep in mind, VoIP is more than just an Internet connection. Therefore, it is best to work with a VoIP-specialized team with years of experiences in the VoIP field!
