Webinar Recap: What are the differences between Grandstream SLA and SCA?

March 7, 2019 by Ying-Hui Chen

This week, Grandstream and VoIP Supply hosted another successful webinar to talk about SLA and SCA features. We received a lot of great questions during the webinar that we’d like to share with all of you who might have missed it!

Recap the webinar with our presentation slides here and Q&A session below.

What was covered in the webinar?

  • Shared Line Appearance (SLA) allows mapping the line key on the IP phone to the POTS lines
  • Shared Call Appearance (SCA) allows multiple phones to share the same extensions and services
  • Call Park
  • Live Demo
    • How to enable SCA
    • How to set up extensions
    • Call Parking
    • Analog Trunks

Grandstream Webinar Q&A Session

Q1: Does the SLA work with PRI?

A: Grandstream’s UCM PBX has a built-in PRI you can use. You can use SCA to monitor the lines. This method only works if each channel has a DID that is only directed to an extension. It’s pseudo monitoring, but there is no true trunk monitoring for PRI.

Q2: Can you have a private extension use SCA and not ring on incoming calls? For example you only want a few phones to ring on the lines but everyone else is able to pick up the line and dial out, or grab calls that are on hold?

A: If you don’t want it to ring, you just want to monitor, under “add private number”, you can disable the function. You can also uncheck ”allow origination from this” to block outgoing calls.

Q3: Call Park vs Monitored Call Park feature usage?

A: On your UCM, there’s no difference between these two. For GXP IP phones with a third-party PBX, we suggest using a monitored call park instead of call park.

Q4: If you change the VPK #1 from default does the phone continue to work? I thought VPK #1 always has to be default as the phone needs to know what account to dial and receive calls on.

A: It depends. VPK1 is typically tied to whatever the main account is. Avoid changing this. Please watch the recording for more details.

5 Reasons Why Businesses Choose VoIP Phones with WiFi

March 5, 2019 by Ying-Hui Chen

As technology advances, your customers are expecting and demanding more from you than ever. Therefore, mobility has become the key to success for many businesses, big or small. That’s where wireless VoIP comes into play! If you are debating whether to go wire-free or not, be sure to check out this blog post as we cover the reasons why businesses choose VoIP phones with WiFi.

#1 Stay Connected Anywhere

WiFi phones, such as the Grandstream’s GXP1750W or Spectralink’s 8440 , give the users the ability to make and receive calls through their VoIP service anywhere in the world, as long as there is a WLAN (wireless local access network) that provides internet connection for the IP phone to connect to. Your salespeople will be set free from their seat to meet clients and your remote workers can collaborate as effectively as being in the same meeting room or office physically.

#2 Ease of Use

Anyone who knows how to use a cell phone can easily manage a WiFi phone very quickly! Most WiFi phones will scan for an access point and connect to one that has the strongest signal and does not require authentication via a web interface. You will be able to get your WiFi phone up and running at the drop of a hat!

#3 Same Luxury, Lower Cost

Need to be mobile but don’t want to be paying huge cell phone bills? VoIP phones with WiFi is your solution. Since VoIP service uses the same Internet connection you already have, you will be able to use the flat-fee low-cost VoIP service to make calls to and from anywhere in the world.

#4 All Features at Your Fingertips

Many of today’s WiFi phones allow users to enjoy the same calling features they have on their analog or desktop VoIP phones.  Features such as speed dialing, call forwarding, call waiting, conference calling and others can be delivered with exceptional voice quality and mobility. You don’t have to sacrifice the features you love for being mobile!

#5 Higher Security

Instead of having your employees use their own cell phones for work with lots of security holes, WiFi phones like Spectralink’s 8440 gives you full control of how your staff is communicating. This is especially important for hospitals and clinics where the communication can involve sensitive information such as patient’s medical history data, etc. Learn more about WiFi phones for healthcare communication here.

Another popular choice of wireless VoIP is DECT phones, which receives a signal through a base station that connects to the phone service to send/receive phone calls. Learn more about the difference between WiFi and DECT here.

Wireless VoIP is growing in popularity every single day as more businesses are searching to have the convenience of mobility with the low cost of VoIP. Don’t be left behind! How Much Does VoIP Service Cost?

February 21, 2019 by Ying-Hui Chen

While we have all sorts of communication channels nowadays such as email and chat services, telephony remains an indispensable part of many businesses. Instead of relying on employees’ mobile phones, organizations are switching to a reliable and secure VoIP service. Therefore, understanding the cost of VoIP service becomes a big topic.

How Much Does VoIP Service Cost?

The VoIP service costs will vary depending on the type of VoIP service you choose, the number of seats your organization requires, the service provider you work with, and many other related factors. The monthly service fee can range from just around $30 to $100 or more.

* Figure 1 is from an Osterman Research white paper published December 2014.

For small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) who have limited resources, a hosted PBX solution is highly recommended as a hosted PBX is significantly less expensive than an on-premises PBX. However, for larger enterprises with more require a more customization and powerful solution, an on-premise PBX would make sense.
