Did You Know – Cisco 8800 Series Desk Phones Support Text-to-Speech

June 29, 2021 by Mary Cheney

VoIP Supply has recently partnered with Cisco and now offers their full line of open SIP products (8800 series desk phones, ATAs and headsets). During a recent training we learned about a very cool and unique feature that we wanted to share with you.

The Cisco 8811, 8841, 8851, 8861, 8845, and 8865 Desk Phones support Text-to-Speech, which Cisco calls Feedback. Once you enable this feature on the phone(s), the phone will read the text on the display out loud!

If you find it difficult to see text on phones or have issues with your vision, this feature will significantly improve your experience. Once you enable this Text-to-Speech (Voice Feedback) a voice prompt helps you navigate your phone buttons, and to use and configure phone features. The voice also reads out loud incoming caller IDs, displayed screens and settings and button functions.

How to Enable the Text-to-Speech Feature (Voice Feedback)

  1. Enabled or disabled by pressing the Select button that is located in the center of the Navigation cluster. When the phone is idle, quickly tap Select three times to turn this feature on or off. A voice prompt alerts you to the feature status.
  2. Push a softkey once, and Voice Feedback reads out the feature that is associated with the key. Quickly push the softkey twice to execute the feature.
  3. Hard keys, such as the Contacts, Applications, and Messages buttons, are treated differently. Push a hard key once, and a voice reads out the screen name followed by the application or setting that is displayed on the phone.

How to Adjust the Volume

You might need to adjust the volume and you will do this using the Volume button, but there are a couple of different ways to do this depending on what feature of the phone you are using.

  • Handset: If you need to adjust the handset volume, you need to lift the receiver from the cradle, and then press Volume.
  • Headset: You will need to select the headset button and then hit the volume button.
  • Speakerphone: Select Speakerphone and Volume.

Keep in mind you may not hear Voice Feedback if you select the Headset button, but don’t have a connected headset. To ensure it’s working, select Speakerphone and you should then hear Voice Feedback again.

And don’t worry, when you are on a call, you will be the only one who hears Voice Feedback so your privacy is assured. Voice Feedback is only available for English language users.

There you have it, a really awesome feature that Cisco offers on their 8800 series phones. If you have additional questions about this feature or this phone series, leave a comment below or reach out to us at 800-398-8647!

How To Ensure Your Jabra Mic Boom is in the Perfect Position

June 25, 2021 by Mary Cheney

When you are talking on the phone with any headset it is important to make sure that your mic boom is in the right position. For this example, we are going to use Jabra headsets that have a mic boom attached to them.

You are able to move the mic boom around quite freely on Jabra headsets, but how do you really know if it’s in the perfect position? Well Jabra has added a really awesome feature to Jabra Direct, which is their software platform that was created to optimize and personalize your headset experience.

If you have a Jabra headset and you have not downloaded Jabra Direct you are missing out! Here’s a link to Jabra Direct so you can download it!

Once you have downloaded the software, you will gain access to some really awesome features, including their mic boom detection tool! This tool will set up pop-up notifications to let you know if your mic boom is in a bad or good location. This ensures the person on the other end can hear you clearly!
As mentioned, this is NOT the only cool feature, but it’s one that I really like and use often! Check out Jabra Direct’s additional features here!

Q&A: Should You Choose a Wired or Wireless Headset?

June 23, 2021 by Mary Cheney

This blog was updated as of Aug. 22, 2023:

Whether you work from home, the office, or a little bit of both, chances are you are a headset user. Over the past few years, we’ve noticed a significant trend lean toward wired headsets due to their ease of connection with computers and desk phones. However, given the growing prevalence of hybrid work arrangements, employees now seek headsets that offer portability, freedom from desk constraints, and exceptional audio quality. Many brands have been releasing very impressive, high-quality versions of wired and wireless headsets, offering unique features and being quite user-friendly. VoIP Supply has a wide selection in stock for you!

Currently, a common question revolves around the choice between wireless and wired headsets. The answer hinges on your individual needs and usage context. Instead of advocating for one particular remarkable headset, it may be more beneficial to you if we present a set of self-reflective questions to aid you in selecting the most suitable headset for your circumstances.

1. Usage Context: Where will you primarily use the headset? Are you situated in an office, or call center, or are you committed to remote work? If we focus on the first two environments – bustling offices and call centers – a wired headset proves to be most popular when it comes to canceling out noise around you. The ease of plug-and-play is still an attractive feature. However, numerous wireless headsets also offer impressive noise isolation if you do need to walk and talk. Either way, be sure to choose the headset that you need whether it be optimized for all leading Unified Communication platforms, Microsoft Teams-certified, or Zoom-certified.

2. Hybrid Scenario: In a hybrid working model where flexibility is key, the decision between wired and wireless becomes nuanced. Both options accommodate portability, but even with wireless headsets, charging considerations arise. Do you want a charging stand on your desk? Whether wired or wireless, consider the logistics of moving the headset between home and office. Would you want multiple headsets for each working location?

3. Movement: Are you predominantly stationary or frequently on the move? If you’re inclined towards movement, such as utilizing a standing desk or working while mobile, the wireless route beckons. However, ensure you account for charging intervals to prevent battery depletion. Having a backup headset on hand is a prudent measure in case of power shortages.

4. Comfort Preference: The debate between over-the-ear and in-ear styles leans towards personal comfort. Looking for mono or dual? For those leading active lives or frequently traveling, earbuds are an ideal choice as they are small and compact. However, there are certain styles that are over-the-ear and foldable, and with cases. Also, are you using this headset for music or personal use? Give thought to how you would feel using either wired or wireless in all scenarios.

There are some amazing features on headsets these days such as acoustic shock protection, swiveling boom arms, dual Bluetooth connectivity, beamforming technology, and more. Let VoIP Supply guide you to your perfect headset. Feel free to call us at 1-800-398-8647 or visit us at www.voipsupply.com. Leave a comment below to let us know what you think!

Jabra Engage 50 – Did You Know

June 15, 2021 by Mary Cheney

Did you know that the Jabra Engage 50 headsets are compatible with all softphone web clients? This headset is ideal for call centers and I can personally say the sound and audio on this headset is superb!

These headsets were built with a robust chip that allows for advanced functions, such as call analytics. Some other key features of this headset are that it has a 3-microphone system that helps to filter out background noises and breathing sounds.  I really like the multi-color status lights on both earcups on the stereo version because no matter which direction you come from, people can see if I am on a call. What’s even cooler about this feature is that you can actually customize the busylight for specific needs.

Whether you are using this headset with an on-prem or cloud-based solution, you can be assured that it will work!

Have you had a chance to try out the Jabra Engage 50 series? What do you think? If you have additional questions about this headset or any Jabra products, leave a comment below or call us at 800-398-8647!
