Q&A: Is VoIP good for a small business? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

September 29, 2021 by Ying-Hui Chen

Is VoIP worth it for a small business? The short answer is 100% Yes! In fact, VoIP makes the perfect communication solution for all-sized businesses, big or small. Let’s look at the reasons why VoIP phone systems make sense for your business:

What are the Advantages of VoIP?

1. Pay Less, Save More!

You will be able to reduce the communication expenses by handling all your communication needs for offices, mobile and data services with one single provider. This not only saves you money, but also saves your precious time!

2. No Management or Maintenance Needed

For a hosted VoIP service, your provider will manage and maintain the network, hardware and all for you. Let the experts do the job for you so you can focus on your core business!

3. Increase Business Efficiency

By taking advantage of the VoIP features such as automated attendant/ customer service, voicemail to email, remote or virtual extensions, and more, you will be able to increase your work efficiency and productivity.

See more basic features of a VoIP phone system:

  • Direct Inward Dialing (DID)
  • Caller ID, Call Transfers, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Three-way calling
  • Call Park, Call Pick-up
  • Call Monitoring and Call Recording
  • Call Queues and Call Routing
  • Conference Calling
  • Analytics and monitoring tools
  • Call reporting
  • Ability to utilize VoIP and PSTN calling methods
  • Web based management
  • Application integration

4. Scale Up or Down Easily

A VoIP phone system grows with your business! Whether you are dealing with a seasonal demand spike or adding a new branch office, a VoIP system can get you up and running quickly without having to invest in additional lines or hardware.

That’s not all! Learn more about how a VoIP Phone system works and other VoIP benefits here.

What are the Disadvantages of VoIP?

The key is to have a stable internet connection! Since VoIP relies 100% on your network bandwidth, if you don’t have sufficient bandwidth, your VoIP service won’t be good either. Depending on the number of concurrent calls your business requires, you may need to increase the bandwidth for a better communication experience.

Is VoIP reliable? You asked. As long as you have sufficient network bandwidth, an up-to-date network router, and a backup Ethernet cable, your VoIP service can be just as reliable as your traditional landline!

How to Integrate Analog and Non-Compatible IP Paging Systems to Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business

September 27, 2021 by Ying-Hui Chen

As the number of Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business users grows exponentially in recent years, many customers are looking for ways to integrate their existing analog and non-certified SIP paging and access control endpoints to these platforms. Let’s take a look at the challenges and how we can help to solve them.

Challenge: Your Paging End-Points Are Not Certified

The biggest challenge is that analog end-points can not be certified for a SIP-based platform like Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams.

And for SIP based IP Paging/Access Control products, very few vendors are certified because Skype for Business does VoIP over User Datagram Protocol (UDP) instead of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which means these IP endpoints must be designed specifically to support the platform.

Solution: Patton’s SmartNode Gateways and eSBCs

Luckily, there’s a perfect solution for this! Patton’s SmartNode Gateways and eSBC are certified with Skype for Business. They can convert analog Paging Systems and endpoints to Skye for Business (SfB) certified SIP connectivity to the Microsoft environment. The units can also act as a bridge between standard, non-compliant, SIP Systems and endpoints to interoperate with Skype for Business.

Using your existing amplifiers, speakers, specialized end-points and wired infrastructure is easy with Patton’s SmartNode solutions and it can really save you a fortune!

Additionally, in the case of standard SIP-based systems, using Patton SmartNodes gateways also means these devices can be addressed by Skype for Business together with other SIP based communication platforms.

Learn more about Patton’s SmartNode Gateways and eSBCs on our website or give our VoIP experts a call at 1-800-398-8647 today!

How to Avoid Poor Voice & Video Quality on Microsoft Teams

September 24, 2021 by Ying-Hui Chen

Are you using Microsoft Teams and your calls keep dropping or being cut out? Or maybe you are tired of hearing the robot-like, delayed voice sounds? Don’t get discouraged! Here are a few things you can do to avoid the frustration:

#1 Use Dedicated IP Phones and Devices

Using dedicated Microsoft Teams phones, headsets, web cameras and other devices can help you ensure a smoother calling experience. These devices are optimized for Microsoft Teams and some of them even come with a dedicated Teams button for ease of use. Here are a few example products:

  • Poly CCX 600: Boasting an elegant design with a touch-screen 7 inch display, the CCX 600 combines ease of use with high-end features and includes an integrated dedicated Teams button.
  • AudioCodes TEAMS C450HD: This IP phone supports single-click switchover between Microsoft Teams and your native solution. The C450HD features a 5″ (1280 x 720) color touch screen and integrated Wi-Fi.
  • Jabra EVOLVE 20 UC Mono: This headset has noise cancelling technology, a noise reduction ear cushion and a busy indicator light that makes this headset perfect for office use
  • Poly Studio X30: The Studio X30 is an all-in-one video bar designed with huddle rooms and small conference rooms in mind.
  • Konftel Cam20: The Konftel Cam20 is a 4K ultra HD video camera ideal for huddle and medium-sized rooms

See more Microsoft Teams devices here.

#2  Implement Quality of Service (QoS)

Make sure your call traffic is prioritized across the managed networks by deploying Quality of Service (QoS). Without QoS, your call can end up being the lowest priority, which means the poorest call quality.

#3 Check Your Computer Space & Speed

Is your device running at maximum capacity? Check your device to make sure you have enough memory and maybe free more space to improve your Teams performance.

#4 Optimize Your WiFi Networks

Did you know your WiFi networks aren’t necessarily configured to support real-time calls? If you are using WiFi, it’s important to check your WiFi networks and make sure they are optimized to  support Microsoft Teams for a high-quality experience. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Plan and optimize the WiFi bands and access point placement.
  2. For dual-band WiFi networks, consider implementing band steering.
  3. Ensure that access points that are next to each other are on channels that don’t overlap.

Check Microsoft’s webpage for a list of network optimization options you can try!
