How to Set up the Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar

March 10, 2023 by Tony Monteleone

The Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar is easy to set up and use so you can get it up and running in minutes and be ready to take on your next video meeting with professional video and audio quality.

Connect your Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar device to your computer with the provided USB cable. Once you plug in the device, you can start using the personal video bar. Please note that a separate adapter is required to connect to the USB-A port on a PC/Mac and that this adapter is not included.

The Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar includes a removable monitor clamp that fits security atop your display with easy adjustments for the optimal angle.

When setting up your Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar, mount and position the camera so that your eyes are level with the top third of your screen and your face appears in the middle area of the video stream.

In a home office, position the camera to an appropriate angle and consider disabling the tracking feature to avoid capturing potential distractions in your video (for example, other people, pets, or TVs). If you are in a conference or meeting room with other people, keep the view focused on people and not the background or room furnishings.

The Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar provides exceptional optics, powerful audio, automatic camera framing, and cutting-edge noise-blocking technology. Once you have set up your Poly Studio P15 Personal Video Bar, you can preview your video stream before you join a meeting and make sure your video quality is at its best and professional looking and that your camera settings are configured correctly.

There are many reasons why video may not look the way you expect. Are the colors not right? Does the video break up? Is there noise?

Use the following recommended advanced tips and guidelines to enhance or improve your experiences during video conferences.

Lighting

▪ Close any curtains, drapes, or blinds over your windows. Daylight is a variable light source and can conflict with interior room lighting.

▪ Bright lighting increases the range of in-focus objects, but inappropriate direct lighting might make you look harsh. Poly recommends using indirect fluorescent lighting in a mid-range, neutral color temperature (3600 K to 4500 K).

Audio and Noise

▪ Mute your audio when you’re silent or before you move your audio device.

▪ Keep your windows and doors closed to minimize unwanted noises.

▪ Close any drapes or blinds over your windows. The glass from window panes can cause issues with acoustics due to reflection.

▪ If you’re in an open or common area, consider using a headset with Active Noise Canceling (ANC) to minimize distractions.

▪ Poly NoiseBlock AI helps the microphone eliminate unwanted noises while picking up your voice. If you’re not using Poly NoiseBlock technology, consider these additional audio suggestions:

◦ Don’t obstruct your microphone with papers or other objects.

â—¦ Avoid tapping on the table or rustling papers.

Clothing, Furnishings, and Backgrounds

▪ To avoid disruptions, exclude the following from the camera view: light sources, tables, chairs, walls, busy decorations, and the floor.

▪ To avoid funny effects, wear clothes that contrast with the background instead of blending into it, and make sure nothing in the background seems to stick out of anyone’s head.

▪ Avoid glossy tabletops, strong colors, or bold wood grain in the room. The best table surface color is a flat satin finish in neutral gray.

▪ A wall that’s painted light gray with a touch of blue works best as a background. Video conferencing systems use a gray or blue reference image to process the video, so a background in that color helps to enhance the video you send.

How to Change Poly VVX D230 Dect Region back to US when Pairing Handsets

March 3, 2023 by Tony Monteleone

VoIP Supply’s Customer Experience Manager noticed a recurring issue that customers were bringing to her and her team’s attention regarding their Poly VVX D230 headsets and how the handsets were unable to pair to the base because the region changed from the US to the EU.

One case that was brought to our attention involved a customer who had two Poly VVX D230s. After upgrading the firmware with the pre-programmed Centurylink provision, the base region was changed from US to EU and it was not possible to register the handsets that are from the US region.

The handset was unable to pair to the base because the base began registering as EU. This was not a European base, it was North American, so the customer was confused and assumed it was defective.

After some research by our Customer Experience Manager, and consulting with our VoIP Team, she discovered that there was a bug in Poly’s firmware that was making this happen. Additional research from our Team through Poly showed that firmware must be updated to Firmware version 7.1.3 on these Poly VVX D230 headsets.

Our VoIP Team  put together a series of steps that the user can follow in order to change the DECT region back to its original US region:

  1. Customer reports the problem and provides the MAC address of the device, and the DECT region the device is supposed to be in.
  2. D230.png
  3. Poly confirms that the region change is due to EEPROM corruption, based on the RFPI being 00xxxx2220.
  4. Customer provides the original, valid RFPI if possible. The information is not on the product label, but it would be in old syslog’s if they exist.
  5. If the original, valid RFPI is not available, Poly contacts ODM manufactory to look up their production record based on the MAC address.
  6. Poly engineering provides a special FW containing a recovery table with a newly added entry with the MAC and RFPI of the device in question.
  7. Customer updates to this special FW, and the region and RFPI of the matching device will be restored.
  8. Customer updates back to their normal GA firmware.
  9. Firmware version 7.1.3 has a permanent fix, customers should update to it after applying the Hot Fix.

Do Grandstream GWN Access Points have WI-FI 6?

March 2, 2023 by Tony Monteleone

We have previously talked about the emergence of Wi-Fi 6, how this is the next generation of Wi-Fi, why to choose Wi-Fi 6, and how we couldn’t wait to learn more about it.

Now is the time to learn! And not only is now the time to learn about Wi-Fi 6, but how Wi-Fi 6 is the perfect Wi-Fi access point (AP) for business-grade wireless network deployments with medium-to-high user density.

And, as we are asked about Wi-Fi 6 access points, we are frequently asked if one of our most popular brands of APs, the Grandstream GWN series of APs, has Wi-Fi 6. The GWN Series does include Wi-Fi 6 APs. Read on to discover the three Grandstream Wi-Fi APs that are on the market and available to you through VoIP Supply.

Wi-Fi 6 is the most recent version of the Wi-Fi network protocol. Due to the increased bandwidth provided by Wi-Fi 6, you get faster Wi-Fi, which means better upload and download speeds.

Wi-Fi 6 was created to support the modern generation of dense environments where faster internet is constantly in demand as many users utilize more bandwidth-demanding devices that require consistent and reliable Wi-Fi connections.

Wi-Fi 6 technology maximizes the number of signals an access point and router can send and receive at the same time, allowing them to communicate with more devices at the same time and to send data to multiple devices in the same broadcast.

The two key technologies responsible for speeding up Wi-Fi 6 connections are MU-MIMO and OFDMA.

MU-MIMO, which stands for “Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output,” was introduced on Wi-Fi 5 devices, but Wi-Fi 6 upgraded it. This technology allows a router to communicate with multiple access points, rather than broadcasting to one device at a time.

OFDMA, which stands for “Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access,” directly impacts uplink and downlink streams and controls how client devices are connected to the access point and bandwidth prioritization.

Grandstream, a leader in providing comprehensive communication solutions, provides an ideal Wi-Fi 6 AP solution with their Grandstream GWN Series Wi-Fi 6 APs.

The GWN series of Wi-Fi 6 APs are perfect for delivering the advantages of Wi-Fi 6 to small-to-medium-sized businesses, multiple-floor buildings, residential settings and commercial locations, and similar environments.

The GWN Wi-Fi 6 APs include the GWN7660, GWN7660LR, and GWN7664.

The GWN7660 offers dual-band 2×2:2 MU-MIMO with DL/UL OFDMA technology and a sophisticated antenna design for maximum network throughput and expanded Wi-Fi coverage range. To ensure easy installation and management, the GWN7660 uses a controller-less distributed network management design in which the controller is embedded within the product’s Web user interface. The GWN7660 is also supported by GWN.Cloud. It offers an effective solution for high-density deployments.

The GWN7660LR offers IP66 weatherproof certified casing, dual-band 2×2:2 MU-MIMO technology with DL/UL OFDMA technology, and a sophisticated antenna design for maximum network throughput and extended coverage range of up to 250 meters. To ensure easy installation and management, the GWN7660LR uses a controller-less distributed network management design in which the controller is embedded within the product’s Web user interface. The GWN7660LR is also supported by GWN.Cloud.

The GWN7664 offers a high-end Wi-Fi access point with dual-band 4×4:4 MU-MIMO, DL/UL OFDMA technology, and a sophisticated internal antenna design for stronger anti-interference, more stable connection, maximum network throughput, and expanded Wi-Fi coverage range. To ensure easy installation and management, the GWN7664 uses a controller-less distributed network management design in which the controller is embedded within the product’s Web user interface. The GWN7664 is also supported by GWN.Cloud.

Ribbon Communications – How to choose the right EdgeMarc Intelligent Edge™ device

February 24, 2023 by Tony Monteleone

With many SMB and Enterprise businesses deploying voice communications over the Internet, they are looking to take proactive measures to prevent quality and security issues by utilizing session border controllers.

Many of these businesses are turning to Ribbon Communications, a company with two decades of leadership in real-time communications.

Ribbon Communications Session Border Controllers are highly secure and protect customers’ networks from attacks. Their Session Border Controllers deliver network security, routing, policy management, and even robust media transcoding.

And Ribbon Communications’ Intelligent Edge™ EdgeMarc series of enterprise session border controllers are specifically designed to provide high security, availability, and service quality for today’s cloud-centric communications services.

Their wide-ranging series of devices includes the EdgeMarc 2900e Session Border Controller and 2900a Session Border Controller.

The EdgeMarc 2900e and 2900a Session Border Controllers are ideal for SMBs, enterprises, and service providers that are looking to deploy Unified Communications while not compromising on security.

The Ribbon Communications EdgeMarc 2900e Intelligent Edge™ Session Border Controller is perfect for SIP Trunking or Hosted PBX applications. The solution supports bi-directional data rates up to 1Gbps and up to 300 concurrent calls.

The Ribbon Communications EdgeMarc 2900a Intelligent Edge™ Session Border Controller brings the same functionality of the EdgeMarc 2900e while adding both outbound and inbound analog line (FXO/FXS) support for applications such as PSTN fail-over, and overhead paging. This solution supports bi-directional data rates up to 1Gbps and up to 300 concurrent calls.

The Edgemarc 2900 series also has Power over Ethernet (PoE) models available, for those businesses that need PoE ports. Ribbon Communications’ EdgeMarc 2900e and 2900a PoE Intelligent Edge™ devices are both ideally suited for Cloud UC applications that require PoE functionality to power IP endpoints. This solution enables service providers to easily support locations with less than 12 phones with a single device (larger implementations can utilize external PoE switches).

While both EdgeMarc 2900e PoE and 2900a PoE Intelligent Edge™ devices have the same key capabilities such as 12 fully managed PoE ports, supporting data rates up to 1 Gbps and 300 concurrent calls, and multiple WAN ports that enable link redundancy and stateful SIP transfer, the EdgeMarc 2900a model includes 6 or 8 FXS ports to support analog endpoints and up to 2 FXO ports.

All EdgeMarc Intelligent Edge™ devices scale according to user demands, allowing service providers to deliver high-quality VoIP solutions to customers of all sizes and network configurations.

And, as with all EdgeMarc Intelligent Edges™ devices, the EdgeMarc 2900e and 2900a are managed with the EdgeView Service Control Center. EdgeView provides a comprehensive view of your VoIP network, enabling you to monitor performance and quickly remediate issues, leading to an improved customer experience and reduced costs.

Additionally, the EdgeMarc and EdgeView family is Microsoft Certified for Teams Direct Routing and is Certified for Zoom Phone.

While both devices help deliver high-quality business-critical communications services over public and private networks, which is best for your business?

The EdgeMarc 2900e Intelligent Edge™ Session Border Controller is ideally suited for Hosted PBX or SIP Trunking applications that do not require analog lines.

However, if you are an SMB or enterprise that is looking for a session border controller that is suited for Hosted PBX or SIP Trunking applications that also supports FXS and FXO connections for fax lines, overhead paging systems, or PSTN lifeline, then EdgeMarc 2900a Intelligent Edge™ Session Border Controller is perfect for your business.

Visit VoIP Supply’s Ribbon Communications Session Border Controllers page to learn more about the devices we have available. If you’re looking for more information or have more questions, give our VoIP experts a call at 1-800-398-8647 or reach out to us at [email protected].

Introducing the Grandstream GWN7800 Series Switches

February 20, 2023 by Tony Monteleone

You know Grandstream IP phones, video conferencing devices, Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 6 APs, on-premises IP PBXs and cloud-based services, business security devices, and facility management solutions.

But do you recall their most famous line of switches of all?

Chances are that you wouldn’t be able to recall at all!

In fact, I don’t even need Johnny Mathis to tell me that the chances are, your chances are awfully good……..awfully good, that is, that you wouldn’t recall!

And the reason would be that Grandstream did not offer a line of switches.

That is, up until now! As Grandstream has introduced their new Grandstream GWN7800 Series Switches.

And chances are that you may be as surprised by this news as Alex Finch (played by 80s era Robert Downey Jr. in the 1989 romantic comedy classic “Chances Are”) was when he gets his memory back and finds out that he died, has been reincarnated, and has unknowingly fallen for his own daughter from his previous life, and once he realizes this, he must end their relationship before his memory is erased by angels! (I know…I know. But it was the 80s!)

(Hey, you might be surprised right now if you realize that you actually know this movie!)

Or you might be as surprised as I was when one of my co-workers told me that they have a parakeet as a pet!

Let’s put our shock and surprise aside for now and let’s go take an in-depth look into the Grandstream GWN7800 series of switches.

The Grandstream GWN7800 series are Layer 2+ managed network switches that allow small-to-medium enterprises to build scalable, secure, high-performance, and smart business networks that are fully manageable. It supports advanced VLAN for flexible and sophisticated traffic segmentation, advanced QoS for prioritization of network traffic, IGMP Snooping for network performance optimization, and comprehensive security capabilities against potential attacks.

The Grandstream GWN7800 series includes three models, the GWN7801, GWN7802, and GWN7803.

This triumvirate of GWN7800 models are available in both PoE and non-PoE versions.

With each model offering a PoE and non-PoE version, the GWN7800 series provides six total switches, with 8, 16, or 24 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports, and two or four Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports. Only the GWN7802 and GWN7803 models are rack-mountable.

The PoE models provide smart dynamic PoE output to power IP phones, IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, and other PoE endpoints.

The Grandstream GWN7801 model features eight standard UTP Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports and two Gigabit SFP ports for fiber optic connections.

Key features of the Non-PoE model (GWN7801):

  • 8 Gigabit ports
  • 2 SFP Ports
  • 20 Gbps Switching Capacity
  • Desktop Mount

Key features of the PoE model (GWN7801P):

  • 8 PoE Ports
  • 120W Max PoE Power

The Grandstream GWN7802 model features 16 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports and four Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports for fiber optic connections.

Key features of the Non-PoE model (GWN7802):

  • 16 Gigabit ports
  • 4 SFP Ports
  • 40 Gbps Switching Capacity
  • Desktop & Rack-Mount

Key features of the PoE model (GWN7802P):

  • 16 PoE Ports
  • 240W Max PoE Power
  • Integrated Fan

The Grandstream GWN7803 model features 24 Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 ports and four Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports for fiber optic connections.

Key features of the Non-PoE model (GWN7803P):

  • 24 Gigabit ports
  • 4 SFP Ports
  • 56 Gbps Switching Capacity
  • Desktop & Rack-Mount

Key features of the PoE model (GWN7803P):

  • 24 PoE Ports
  • 360W Max PoE Power
  • Integrated Fan

The Grandstream GWN7800 series can be managed through the local network controller embedded in the GWN7800 series switch, Grandstream’s free on-premise network management software (GWN Manager), and Grandstream’s cloud network management platform (GWN.Cloud).

Grandstream GWN7800 series of switches come with a wide range of features such as powerful processing capabilities, multiple security prevention mechanisms, diverse reliability protection, and easy management and maintenance, allowing these switches to be the backbone for any Wi-Fi access point or IP endpoint deployment, making the GWN7800 series the ideal managed network switches for small-to-medium enterprises, schools, and hotels.

Small to medium enterprise offices can leverage this series of switches to create a network foundation for both their Wi-Fi and IP endpoint solutions

Entire school-wide Wi-Fi deployments can be anchored by the Grandstream GWN7800 series, along with IP endpoints such as phones and IP intercoms where needed throughout the facility.
