How to Mount the Grandstream GWN7610 WiFi Access Point

May 11, 2017 by Steve Lopian

This day and age, it is hard to imagine a business that runs successfully without the Internet. It’s the lifeblood of any sustainable organization, and lately, it goes far beyond having a website and being able to send emails.

Most businesses need the Internet to function. If you are running an e-commerce business then having, or not having the Internet is life or death. If you are running a brick and mortar business, then chances are you use VoIP for your telecommunication needs.

These examples of how having the Internet for your business are extremely important, but the Internet dependability still goes even further! While the possibilities of what the Internet can do for your business are endless, this blog will stop at WiFi.

WiFi is so important these days. It enables most devices to access the Internet wirelessly! But sometimes WiFi signals can weaken if you are too far out of range. This is a big problem for multi-floor businesses and businesses that have large warehouses.

We all use WiFi to deliver the Internet to our cell phones and even our laptops, but more and more, we are seeing businesses using WiFi phones! For these businesses, it is imperative that there is a strong WiFi signal throughout the whole building.

That is where the Grandstream GWN7610 WiFi Access Point comes in! This handy device can be installed to extend WiFi coverage to where you need it most, like your huge warehouse! If your warehouse employees are using WiFi phones to communicate to get the job done, then you may want to invest the GWN7610 to ensure great WiFi coverage.

gwn7610

This blog is not going to get into how to set up your GWN7610 or tell you how to configure it the way you want it. This is a Basic how-to blog, so today I am going to tell you how to physically mount your GWN7610, and guess what? It’s simple! Just follow these easy steps!

How to Mount the Grandstream GWN7610 WiFi Access Point

  1. Position the mounting bracket at the desired location on the all with the arrow pointing up.
  2. Use a pencil to mark the four mounting holes (screw holes DIA 5.5 mm)
  3. Insert screw anchors into the 5.5 mm holes.
  4. Attach the mounting bracket to the wall by inserting the screws into the anchors.
  5. Align the arrow on the GWN7610 with the arrow on the locking tab of the mounting bracket and ensure that your GWN is firmly seated on the mounting bracket.
  6. Turn the GWN clockwise until it locks into place and fits the locking tab.

And that’s it! Once you have this bad boy mounted, it will be up to your fantastic IT department to get it up and running! This process is also a very user-friendly and Grandstream has done a great job mapping it out in their user manual for you to understand.

Soon after your GWN7610 is working, you should notice a big difference in WiFi signal strength. Especially for the hard working people in the warehouse, or even the office workers that are stuck on the top floor of your building!

Do you use access points to extend your WiFi range? Do you use the GWN7610? If not, what are you using? We want to know!

Growing School Replaces Outdated Phone System with Modern UC Solution

school-picFrederick Bird Primary School is a larger-than-average primary school opened in 1905 in the inner city community of Coventry, UK, serving over 720 pupils from diverse cultural backgrounds. In order to keep up with several infrastructure rebuilds and extensions over the years, Frederick Bird has been relentlessly maintaining and updating their learning environment to provide the best education and welfare to each and every child in the school.

The Challenge

Frederick Bird’s old phone system had a long history and was outdated. It became expensive to maintain and difficult to make any changes to the system (e.g. move an extension). The running costs of the old system were high with multiple ISDN line rentals and ISDN call charges and upgrading the old phone system was not cost effective. Therefore, the school determined that they needed a new system that was not only more cost effective, but also easier to administer and deploy. To accommodate the newly built extension, the Frederick Bird School needed to modernize their phone system.

The Solution

Digium The Asterisk Company LogoAfter extensive research by Danny O’Grady of Coventry City Council and Micheal Cross, IT Manager of Frederick Bird Primary School, the Digium Switchvox system was selected as providing the best value given its rich functionality. Frederick Bird chose Digium IP phones for easy deployment with existing CAT5 infrastructure. They deployed D70s for the front-office staff and D40s for the rest of the school.

“Having the ability to join the front-office pool (as an agent) simply by pressing one button”, said Tara Taylor, Business Manager, “was particularly useful, especially during school holidays when front office staff is on leave.”

case-study-digium

The Results

Following the rollout of the new system and initial training of front office staff by Daconi, new features have slowly been introduced. The useful functions of the new system that the school staff already benefits from include voicemail-to-text, incoming faxes are automatically emailed to staff, customizable address books/ handsets, and more.

Looking at the bigger picture, Frederick Bird School has saved the operating costs by replacing three ISDN2 rentals with one broadband rental, retaining the PSTN line for the broadband, fax, and as a voice backup. Office space was also saved by using Switchvox to terminate fax calls instead of dedicated fax equipment. Savings on call charges were also made by using an independent SIP provider.

Extending the use of the free Softphone apps for iPhone and Android phones and making use of Switchvox’s messaging capabilities to enhance communication, are the next possible steps that Frederick Bird is planning in the near future.

[Infogrphic] How to Choose a Bluetooth Headset That Works for You

May 8, 2017 by Ying-Hui Chen

Browsing page over a page, website over a website, you are still not sure which wireless headset will be your perfect match? Take a break and read the 7 keys in this blog to help you find your ideal Bluetooth headset efficiently!

7-keys-to-a-bluetooth-headset-that-works-for-you

What to look for when choosing a Bluetooth headset?

You may be looking at a ton of headset features and don’t know where to start. Take one step back to think about the seven keys here and list o ut your requirements before you start shopping, you will be able to easily find the best headset that simply works for you! Let’s get to it.

Key #1 Location

Think about the location you will be using your headset in. Are you using it for jogging in a park, working in an office, or talking on the go? Chances are, you have a couple places where you take calls or listen to music most often. If you plan to use it outdoor, a Bluetooth headset with a strong microphone and noise cancellation technology is a good choice to go for.

Key #2 Talk Time

Take talk time into consideration. If you are a salesperson, you may want to have over 8-10 hours of talk time. Be aware that there’s a tradeoff between the battery life and the size of your Bluetooth headset. So enjoying a lighter headset means you might have to charge it more often.

Key #3 Standard USB Port

Make sure your headset has a standard USB port that lets you charge from a powered USB port on a desktop or laptop easily. This will save you trouble from carrying too many chargers when traveling and can easily borrow from someone when you forget to bring yours.

Key #4 Multipoint Connectivity

If you are a multi-tasker who needs to switch your headset from one device to another, make sure your headset support multipoint connectivity. This feature will save you a lot of time without needing to manually switch back and forth.

Key #5 Binaural vs Monaural

Typically, binaural options are suitable for people who need to concentrate on a call while monaural headsets are good for people who need to be aware of what’s happening around him/her while on a call with someone.

Key #6 Sound Technology

Pay attention to the sound technology your headset has to offer. For example, if you plan to talk in a windy outdoor area, WindSage technology and Sound Focus technology will come in handy. Most of the headsets nowadays have HD voice to enhance clear sound.

Key #7 Other Special Features

After running through the basics above, you will want to check out some special features that can make your day just a little bit more efficient. Everyone had different needs when it comes to using a headset, but here you can find some of the features I find useful:

How to Read Battery Life on the Plantronics Calisto P620

May 5, 2017 by Steve Lopian

Everyone knows by now that the way we work has changed from the past. The days of having to be in the office all the time or waiting a full day for a response to an email are long gone. Now, more than ever, people are bringing their office with them on the go, and now responding to important messages can be almost instantaneous.

We are able to achieve this style of work largely because of the popular BYOD trend that has been taking over businesses. Tons of new gadgets are coming out faster than we can buy them, which has made working from home or on the road simple. It seems that even with all of these new toys there will always be some reason to show up to the office every now and again. Wait. Is there?

One thing that comes to mind when I think of having to be in the office is for a conference. Not being present for a big meeting or a big company decision seems somewhat unprofessional. But then I think about it more, and well, nope.

It is a new age of business, and with video conferencing becoming more popular, it seems like just hearing your voice or seeing you on a screen is 100% acceptable these days. You really don’t have to be present for a conference. Especially if you are one of the many road warriors that are out there.

If you have been living under a rock, then allow me to have the opportunity to blow your mind and tell you that there are personal and portable conference phones! Most of these are Bluetooth, can plug into up to your laptop, and fit in the palm of your hand!

If you find yourself on the road a lot, but still need to be involved in conference room meetings, then this is something you will want to look into. Or if you haven’t been living under a rock, this might be something you already have.

For this blog, we are going to take a look at the Plantronics Calisto P620. This is a popular portable conference phone that delivers. This was designed with mobility in mind and is a must-have for when you need to be on a conference call in say, your hotel room.

How to Read Battery Life on the Plantronics Calisto P620

When fully charged, the Calisto P620 offers up to 6 hours of talk time bust just like anything else, the more you use it, the more the battery will drain. So how can you tell how much battery life is left in your Calisto P620? The flashing red LED on the unit will let you know how low your battery is by how many times it flashes in a cycle! Here’s what I mean:

  1. If you have 2 to 6 hours of talk time, the Calisto P620 will flash red once.
  2. If you have less than 2 hours of talk time remaining, the Calisto P620 will flash twice.
  3. If you have less than 30 minutes of talk time remaining, then you will see three flashes.

If you do in fact see the red LED flashing in threes then it is time to charge! If you are in a pinch, you can plug the Calisto P620 into your laptop via USB to charge as well! Because we all know that keeping anything portable charged is extremely important!

Are you a road warrior? Do you use the Plantronics Calisto P620? If not, what do you use for your portable conference phone? We want to know!
