It’s Time To Migrate – Skype for Business to Teams IP Phones

Are you still using Skype for Business (3PIP) IP phones? If the answer is yes, then you want to ensure those endpoints will still work seamlessly within a Teams environment. Lucky for you, we work with many authorized Microsoft Teams partners and they have put together some great resources that we would like to share with you.

By migrating your Skype for Business IP phones with standard SIP firmware, Cisco IP phones with multiplatform SIP firmware, or SIP devices from vendors such as Poly, Yealink, and AudioCodes, you can utilize all of the amazing features you are familiar with, such as Team meetings, call transfers, call queues, and voice apps support.

But let’s be real, migrating systems can be daunting. That’s why it’s important to do your research and make a plan before diving in. You are going to want to start by getting familiar with the Teams SIP Gateway. In short, SIP Gateways allow you to use any of the devices we mentioned above with Microsoft Teams!

There are some important requirements to keep in mind that you will need to be aware of before starting this migration process to the Teams SIP Gateways. The most important is that the Teams user must have a phone number with PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) calling enabled to even use the SIP Gateway.

If you are using a 3PIP or SIP device, you MUST have a License for Microsoft Teams, Skype for Business Online Plan 2, Microsoft 356 Phone System (Via E5 or standalone licenses), PSTN enablement via a Microsoft Teams Calling Plan, Direct Routing or Operator Connect and lastly a Microsoft Teams Shared Devices license for any common area devices. For an updated list of compatible devices click here

Some personal advice from my own migrations: don’t be afraid to lean on your IT team or reach out to Microsoft for support. They’re there to help walk you through the process and ensure a smooth transition. Another tip that I wanted to share with you is to check the manufacturer support pages. They tend to have very helpful information on the best way to upgrade your devices to ensure a smooth transition. To help you locate some of these resources, we have listed a couple of links below!

Don’t let the fear of change hold you back. With a little bit of planning and support, migrating your Skype for Business devices to the Microsoft Teams SIP Gateway can be a breeze. So, let’s get to it and embrace the future of workplace communication!

How to Check For Updates on Your Poly Device

June 8, 2023 by Mary Cheney

HP Poly, formerly known as Polycom and Plantronics now has an extensive line of products and over the last couple of years has been making important software improvements to many of their most popular products.

We often have customers reach out to us asking for assistance with understanding which software version they might need for their device or how to actually update their software. We know firsthand that it’s difficult to sift through pages and different websites to locate this information, so we have included a couple of links below that will help you find the poly software update information you are looking for.

If you are looking to update the software of your Poly (Polycom) VVX phone, SoundStructure, or SoundStation IP then check out the information below.

The Latest Poly UC Software Release page will highlight the most important and recent software updates that Poly has released. Once you are on this page, you will see they have broken down the devices and the latest software upgrades. They will also let you know if you need to do chronological software updates or if you can just update to the latest version. This is a very important step to pay attention to. Oftentimes customers will just update the software without checking to see if they need to do multiple updates in order to get to the latest… it’s probably one of the number one mistakes we see. So checking this page can save you a lot of hassle.

Click here for Poly’s Better Together Over Ethernet connector (BTOE) application support matrix. This page also includes links to detailed release notes which can be located under the title of the release version.

If you were not able to locate the Poly (Polycom or Plantronics) software update, leave a comment below and we will help to connect you to the right information!

Shopping VoIP Products – Made Easy!

June 5, 2023 by jstewart

On-line shopping has been booming for years, but it spiked during the pandemic and afterward as people became reliant on being able to buy what they needed from the comfort of their homes. However, this created its own set of unique issues, specifically when shopping for your business. We have received various questions and concerns about an easier way to shop for what you need and immediately know if it is certified, supported, and/or compatible with a Service Provider. “Ask, and Ye shall receive.” VoIP Supply has made shopping our products even easier and more convenient for you.

“I just want to be able to find what I am looking for!” I am sure this has been uttered or at least thought about by almost everyone while trying to find what you are looking for on-line. I myself just experienced the agony of hours of Google searching trying to find certified products from Service Providers so that I could do my job. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering you must endure when trying to find the exact VoIP products you need for your business that are also compatible or certified by your Service Provider. This is why VoIP Supply has made it easier than ever to find the exact product options you need without the headache of searches and rabbit holes of provider sites.

VoIP Supply has created a section of our website solely dedicated to listing Service Providers and all of their certified and compatible devices from the brands you know and trust. The Shop By Service Provider section of our site lists over a dozen Service Providers including:

Once on that page, you can choose your Service Provider and then shop by brand. Some of these brands include:

In a post-pandemic world, the hybrid workforce seems here to stay. With that, comes more devices needed to work remotely and seamlessly. Service Providers know they need to make sure they have a wide array of options. They are constantly updating which devices are certified and compatible and that’s why VoIP Supply updates this section of the site regularly. We are dedicated to providing you with the most up-to-date information and an easier way to shop!

How To Select The Right Headsets

June 2, 2023 by VoIP Experts

We get it, there are a lot of headset options out there, and trying to find out which headset is compatible with the phone or program you are using can be difficult to find. We are here to help and provide you with some tools that will guide you through this sometimes daunting process.

If you did not already know this, many headset companies have pretty useful tools to help you navigate which headsets are compatible with certain VoIP Phones or programs.

Here are some simple but useful tips to look out for when you are looking for a new headset! Let’s begin by looking at a manufacturer’s product names. For this example, I am going to use Jabra, specifically the Jabra Evolve2 75. Let’s look at the variations of this model and point out how to figure out the differences!

  • Evolve2 75 Link380c UC Stereo Beige
  • Evolve2 75 Link380a MS Stereo Black
  • Evolve2 75 Link380a MS Stereo Beige
  • Evolve2 75 Link380c MS Stereo Black
  • Evolve2 75 Link380c MS Stereo Beige
  • Evolve2 75 Link380a UC Stereo Stand Black
  • Evolve2 75 Link380c UC Stereo Stand Black
  • Evolve2 75 Link380c MS Stereo Stand Black
  • Evolve2 75 Link380a MS Stereo Stand Black

Alright, are you confused? Well, don’t be! As you can see there are some simple giveaways right off the bat, such as the color and if it comes with a stand or not. The next thing to point out is UC vs. MS. UC stands for Universal Communication and this means it will connect to pretty much any platform or compatible phone(s) you want to use it with. MS stands for Microsoft and that means that the headset has been certified with Microsoft and that it most likely has a Microsoft Teams Connection button built right into the headset. This allows for a plug-and-play experience on the Microsoft Teams platform. The next thing to point out is the lowercase a and c. This is the identifier for the type of USB connection it has. The a represents a USB-A connection and the c represents a USB-C connection. This is probably the biggest thing that most people forget to check when purchasing a headset, so it’s always good to check the device or devices you going to be connecting the headset to, to ensure you have the right connection.

The next area that I want to cover is trying to figure out if the headset you want to purchase is compatible with the device or devices you are using and most importantly if you need additional accessories to help you connect to those devices. Do not take a guess, always check to make sure what you are purchasing is compatible! Below are a couple of amazing resources to help you make the right selection.

Q & A: What is Single-Cell Vs. Multi-Cell?

With DECT technology becoming more and more popular these days, we often have a lot of questions come in, one of those being what is Single-Cell Vs. Multi-Cell?

During our most recent webinar with our partners at Snom/VTech, Simon Bradbrook was able to walk us through the difference and why it matters. Here’s what he had to say!

Single-Cell means that you have one single base station and the handsets are hanging off one base station. Where it becomes Multi-Cell is when you add another base station, you are creating a mesh network around that so the handsets will operate around that area. Multi-Cell gives you complete coverage for wide areas and it makes sure when you are building that mesh network, a handoff will then be completely seamless.

Here are a couple of options if you are looking for a DECT solution

Small to Medium-Size Business Solutions: Check out the Snom M5XX solution. This solution can support 1-6 base stations and it increases the size of the area you are able to get them to work within.

Enterprise Business Solutions: Consider the Snom M9XX solution. This model allows from 1-1000 base stations! The M9XX also has a ‘site survey mode’ built right into the handsets so you don’t need additional software or hardware on premise to know where to place your additional base stations! Game changer right there!

If you have additional questions about DECT technology or any of the solutions we have discussed in this Q&A post, leave a comment below. You can also check out our latest webinar with Snom for more details about both of these solutions!
