How does a VoIP adapter work?

VoIP adapters are small, simple devices, but they play an important role for residential VoIP service. We received a lot of inquiries about VoIP adapter. What is it? How does it work? Why is it important? Let’s find out!

What is VoIP Adapter?

A VoIP adapter is a device that converts analog voice signals into digital IP packets for transport over an IP network. A VoIP adapter also converts digital IP packets in analog voice streams.

Standard VoIP adapters connect to analog telephones via an FXS port. The VoIP adapter then connects to your Local Area Network (LAN) with an Ethernet cable via an RJ45 port. Some adapters also feature an FXO port so you can connect to the Publicly Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).

How does a VoIP Adapter work?guide-to-adapter

Think of VoIP adapters as a bridge between an IP network and an analog station device and/or the PSTN. Depending on where the voice traffic originates from, a VoIP adapter converts voice traffic into the proper form for receipt by the destination network or device:

If the voice traffic originates from an analog telephone or the PSTN, the VoIP adapter will convert the analog voice signal into a digital signal. This signal then is compressed using a codec and broken into a series of packets that will be transferred across the IP network using signaling protocol.

If the voice traffic is from an IP network, the adapter will decompress the digital packets into a digital signal that is converted into an analog signal for receipt by the station device or sent across the PSTN.

Standard Features of a VoIP Adapter

  • Compliant with multiple protocols including SIP, H.323 and MGCP
  • Support for G.711, G.723.1, G.726, and G.729A voice codecs
  • T.38 compliant (for faxing)
  • Echo cancellation, Jitter Buffer, VAD and CNG
  • Web-based administration/management
  • Automatic provisioning via TFTP/HTTP

These are just standard features found in the majority of VoIP adapters. Each VoIP adapter has its own unique differences.

2017 Grandstream Partner Conference Recap

September 15, 2017 by Steve Lopian

Last week we were able to attend this year’s Grandstream partner conference, and needless to say, it was a blast. We were able to take in the sights and sounds of Boston, Massachusetts, as well as catch a Red Sox game and even a boat ride on the Spirit of Boston!

This is one of the premierĀ opportunities to network with fellow colleagues in the VoIP world, and also get an inside look at what Grandstream has in store for 2018. We were not disappointed!

We were able to get our hands on several new products that are expected to roll out in the very near future. One of our favorites would have to be Grandstream’s new, and first ever, WiFi phone! The WP800. This is not expected to see the light of day until early 2018 and we can hardly wait!

Overall, we were able to leave Boston with some great takeaways before heading back home to wonderful Buffalo, New York! If you were not able to attend this year’s partner conference, then don’t forget to check out our short video! Join our Senior Product Specialist, Youleidy Vegas, as she captures the highlights of this great event!

Were you also in attendance at the 2017 Grandstream Partner Conference? Did you have a good time? Let us know in the comments below! We want to know!

How to Choose Your Preferred Audio Device on the Cisco SPA514G

Choices, choices, choices. Everyone loves choices. Can you imagine a world where the only flavor of ice cream was vanilla? Or the only place to go out to eat was McDonald’s? Yeah, no thanks.

Having choices is one of the things that makes life great, it is a privilege, but having choices when it comes to the things we do every day, is an important necessity. For example, your job!

We go to work almost every day, and for most of us, it’s filled with the same tasks. Maybe moving your weekly meetings to different times can erase some monotony, or changing the order of your tasks can maybe help make things up. Anything to keep things fresh! Einstein once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, and I think there is some truth to that.

For those of us in an office setting, it is almost certain that you have a desk phone, and you more than likely use it often. When that phone rings, we all know there are several ways to pick it up. You can lift the handset, you can answer with your headset, and so on and so on.

But what if I told you that you can have even more choices when it comes to picking up your desk phone? As long as your desk phone is the Cisco SPA 514G! Now, I am not saying that this is the only phone that can do this, but we will use it as an example for the sake of this blog.

Cisco SPA514g

Typically when your phone rings, it is a specific line that is calling you. This will cause one of the line keys to light up! Common knowledge tells us that pressing the active line key will answer the call, but with the Cisco SPA514G, you can decide what device is activated after pressing the line key.

How to Choose Your Preferred Audio Device on the Cisco SPA514G

Telling your phone what you want to answer the call with is actually pretty simple too! Just follow these steps below:

  1. Press the Setup button
  2. Select Preferences followed by Preferred Audio Device and lastly, Edit
  3. Press Option to scroll through your choices
  4. When the option you want is displayed, press Ok
  5. Then press Save

And that’s it! Now, by hitting the active line key on an incoming call, your SPA514G will answer with the device you set it to. The best part is after you get tired of answering the phone that way, you can always change it up! Because of choices.

Do you have a Cisco SPA514G on your desk? Do you use the Preferred Audio Device feature? Tell us what you think! We want to know!

Alternating Between the Handset, Headset, and Speakerphone on the Polycom VVX400

September 7, 2017 by Steve Lopian

We have to spend a lot of time at work. For some of us, that means traveling or even staying at home to work. For the rest of us, we are typically stuck in an office or cubicle.

Because we spend so much time in our “area”, I think one of the most important things to maintain at work is your comfort level. This can be pretty simple to achieve. Getting new office chair, a rolling mat underneath you, maybe a picture on the wall.

All of these things can make us more comfortable, but I also believe that having the freedom to use your deskphone however you want can not only bring a certain level of comfort, but it also can make things easier on you so that you can be more productive!

One phone in particular that comes to mind when thinking about endless options is the Polycom VVX400. This phone will allow you to use a headset, handset and it even has speakerphone as well.

Polycom VVX400

These options are great to have. I know most of us prefer to just wear a wireless headset all day. Some people can’t stand headsets, and would rather go old fashioned and just stick to their handset. Or maybe you are in your office with the door closed all day, and simply enjoy pushing the speakerphone button to talk!

Either way, something always comes up, so it’s good to know that with the Polycom VVX400, you can switch between any one of these at any time. Even when you’re on a call!

Alternating Between the Handset, Headset, and Speakerphone on the Polycom VVX400

Switching between these options is also one of the easiest things you can do too! For example, if you are on a call, and using the handset and the call is running a lot longer than you thought. Maybe you want to get up and stretch your legs! Simply put your headset on and press the Headset button on the phone. Once pressed, this button will turn green, letting you know that you are now talking through the speakerphone and not your headset. Let the customer know they are on speak, and begin talking!

There are a lot of other combinations, and reasons why you would want to alternate between handset, headset, and speakerphone, but you get gist! Ā And if this is something that you didn’t think was possible, and you have a deskphone with these capabilities, go ahead and give it a try! Let us know what you think!

Do you have a Polycom VVX400 on your desk? How often do you alternate between these three options? If you don’t have a VVX400, what phone do you have? Can you alternate call style? We want to know!
