Whether you are new to VoIP or have been using VoIP for a while, it is pretty easy to say that you are constantly learning new things. Maybe it’s something that you overlooked or maybe it is just keeping up with the latest technology. Either way, no matter how insignificant or major, you can never know everything there is to know about VoIP.
For this blog, I wanted to go over something that might fall more towards the “insignificant” side of things. Seeing as this is a basic how-to blog, it seems fitting. On top of that, believe it or not, we get a ton of calls here at VoIP Supply asking about this simple feature.
What is it you ask? It’s Do Not Disturb! The magic button that basically turns your phone off, without turning it off. A lot of our engineers have reported that one of the most popular support calls we receive is how to turn Do Not Disturb (DND) off.
I am going to go ahead and give a general explanation on how to do this. Remember that not every phone is the same, but when it comes to DND, the method is very similar. For the sake of the blog, we will use the popular Polycom VVX410.
First, what does DND do? Do Not Disturb stops your phone from ringing and sends all incoming calls directly to voicemail. All calls you receive while DND is enabled are logged under your Recent Calls list.
You can activate DND mode by pushing the DND button on your phone. This can either be a soft key (like on the Polycom VVX410) or in some cases, it can be a line key. Once DND mode is activated, you will notice an icon in the upper right corner of the phone’s screen that looks like this:
If you are new to VoIP, or just got a new desk phone, then I can see how something like this might slip through the cracks undetected. However, turning DND off and restoring all of your phone’s functionality is very simple. All you have to do is press the DND button again!
It’s really that simple. The same way you turned DND on is the same way you turn it off. This can get more complicated if you hit DND on accident or you are not the one who turned it on in the first place. So let this blog be a reminder that if your phone is not working to always check Do Not Disturb!
Now, you may be asking yourself, why would I ever want DND turned on? The most common reason that I can think of is that you are on PTO or vacation for an extended period of time and you do not want your phone to bother your coworkers. If you work in a position with high call volume, then you may even want to turn DND on even if you are away from your desk for a short time, like lunch.

We recently installed around 300+ polycom VVX411s and are having a problem with the do not disturb function. We do not have the icon on our phones and need to find the numerical codes to turn it off because about 10% of the phones are in DND.

Is there a way for other users to see you are in DND mode, let's say in the form of the DND icon next that particular contact on THEIR device?
DND works in the sense that any incoming calls, internal or external, are routed to that user's voicemail. But in the sense of "paging" another user using the intercom feature, the page will still go through.
Being able to see a user's status prior to paging them would be very beneficial.

You can accomplish this by utilizing the Presence / Buddies feature. Poly (Polycom) phones support a maximum of 64 buddies for Open SIP server platforms.

I wish you could schedule DnD like on a cell phone, as people were working from home during covid or home office users, it would be nice to have the phone be in DnD at night time.
